How we calculate avoided CO2 emissions
Every time an item gets a new life via PS Auction, we calculate the estimated avoided CO₂ emissions. Here we explain how the calculation is done and the data it is based on.

How the calculation works
How the calculation is done
Transaction
When an item is sold, the transaction is automatically registered along with price and product information.
Categorization
The item is linked to a sustainability category based on what type of product it is. Each category represents an industry and forms the basis for the subsequent calculation.
Intensity factor
Each category has an intensity factor specific to the industry it belongs to. The intensity factor describes how much CO₂e is generated on average per krona of turnover in the relevant industry.
Real-time results
The calculation is performed automatically when the item is sold. The result is displayed directly on the item page as estimated avoided CO₂ emissions in grams of CO₂e.

Climate data for follow-up
The calculation is shown as grams of CO₂e for each item. The results can be followed up per item, summed over time, or compiled within different categories. In this way, both buyers and sellers can track how reuse contributes to reduced emissions and get a comprehensive picture of the climate benefit over time.
